PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF TURKISH CARPET EXPORT

“Performing 513 million US dollars export figure in the first nine months of 2006, Turkish carpet sector has eventuated a dollar-based increase of 12.6% compared to the same period of last year. While machine made carpet export has recorded 432 million US dollars with a 16.5% increase, handmade carpet export recieved an export value of 81 million US dollars with a decrease of 4.7%.“

Increasing rapidly in the recent years, Turkish carpet export had reached 670 million US dollars at the end of 2005. During the first six months of 2006, by increasing 12,5% compared to the first half of the previous year, it has reached 327 million US dollars. Analyzing Turkish carpet export performance concerning January-September 2006 period, as seen in the table above, there had been provided a 12,6% increase in carpet export during this period. Between January-September 2006, there had been recorded an export value of 513 million US dollars. By this figure, carpet export held a 0,84% share of the total Turkish export. Turkish carpet sector had recieved a 0,91% share of her total export in 2005. It is predicted that Turkey’s carpet export will also be increased during the last quarter of 2006, and will record the same figure by the end of this year.

Contrary to the previous years, there had been recorded an increase in April 2006, while seen minor decreases in May and June, same as in 2004 and 2005. On the other hand, increases recorded during August and September continue the same as in the previous years.

 

Handmade & Machine Made Carpet Export Shares

Besides having different production and marketing activities, export performances of handmade and machine made carpet sub-sectors also show differentials. While in 2005, 82% of Turkish carpet export was consisting of machine made, 18% of it had been formed by handmade carpets. Distribution of Turkish carpet export was eventuated during the first nine months of 2006 as 84% of machine made and 16% of handmade carpets. Compared to 2005, in the January-September 2006 period, there had been a 4,7% decrease experienced in handmade carpet export. An increase of 15,8% had been recorded in machine made carpet during the first nine months of 2006. Thereby, total Turkish carpet export had reached 513 million US dollars by a 12,6% increase.

Evaluation of Turkish Carpet Export Considering World Groups

As also seen in the table, distribution of Turkish carpet export considering country groups during the first nine months of 2006 can be summarized as following; Holding a share of 21,7% of the total Turkish carpet export during 2005, the Middle East countries with a share of 23,7% had been the country group of which Turkey exported the most during the first nine months of 2006. During this period; Russian Federation , Ukraine had taken place in the country group of which Turkey exported secondly the most. Share of these countries of the total Turkish carpet export had been raised up to 14,6% in 2004 and 18,8% in 2005. During the January- September 2006 period, these countries had taken an export share of 19,3%. While Turkish carpet export to the EU (15) countries had increased by 2,9%, considerable increase of 32,3% in export figures had been realized in the new member countries of the Union. Turkish carpet export to EU countries had increased with a ratio of 8,9%. Therefore EU had held a 19,1% share of the total Turkish carpet export. During the January-September period, while Turkey’s export to the other OECD countries had increased by 14,2%, there had also been an export increase of 13,3% to the other European countries. Even though not holding major shares in Turkey’s total carpet export, African and the other Asian countries drew attention by high increases in their export ratios. Turkey’s carpet export to the African countries has increased by 82% during the first nine months of 2006, compared to the same period of the previous year. Carpet export to the other Asian countries has also recorded an increase of 82,7% compared to last year. Briefly, carpet export having recorded an increase in terms of all country groups during the January-September period of 2006 is regarded as an extremely positive progress.

Turkish Carpet Export To The Middle East Countries

Holding the largest share of Turkey ’s total carpet export during the first nine months of 2006, the Middle East countries had recorded a 16,3% increase in total carpet export compared to the same period of 2005. Major part of the carpets exported to these countries consists of machine made carpets. Excluding Israil and Iran, Turkey’s total carpet export to these countries had increased. Machine made carpet export to Jordan had increased by 32,7%. Continued to increase, Saudi Arabia had been the leading country in Turkey’s machine made carpet export as to 2005 figures. On the other hand, handmade carpet export to this country had decreased during the same period.

Turkish Carpet Export To Old Soviet Union Countries

As seen in the table above, old Soviet Union countries are the second country group of which hold the second highest share of the total Turkish carpet export. Total handmade carpet export value of 702.000 US dollars had been performed to the countries in this group during the January-December 2005 period. Recorded an increase, Turkish handmade carpet export has already reached 1.442.000 US dollars in the first nine months of this year. In case of providing the same increase, export value of 2005 will be almost tripled during the last three months of this year. Russian Federation, Ukraine and Azerbaijan had been the most effective countries in this increase. Kazakhstan had been the third country on Turkey’s export list in machine made carpet concerning 2005. Compared to the previous year, Turkey’s machine made carpet export to this country had increased with a ratio of 35,1% during the January-June 2006 period. Azerbaijan had become the second country in this group by her high export ratio of 34,6% increase in machine made carpet. Turkey’s machine made carpet export performed to Uzbekstan in 2005 had decreased by 12,6%, compared to 2004. Mentioned downturn tendency has been continuing during the first nine months of 2006.

Turkish Carpet Export To European Union Countries

Evaluating Turkish carpet export performed to European Union countries, previous 15 members and 10 new member countries of the Union had been examined separately. Consisting totally of 25 member countries, there had been performed 17,3% of the total Turkish carpet export to EU in 2005. With its 15 member countries holding 14,4% and 10 new members with 4,7% ratio, EU has held a 19,1% share of the total Turkish carpet export during the January-September period of 2006. Turkey’s hand made carpet export to EU (15) countries has been in downturn tendency with a high ratio. With a downturn of 18,1% during last year, hand made carpet export to EU(15) countries has recorded a decrease of 32,3% between January-September 2006, compared to the same period of 2005. Among the countries in this group the highest downturn ratio had been realized particularly in Germany. Being the second most exporting country of Turkey in hand made carpet concerning 2005, there had been eventuated an export value of 6.507.000 US dollars to Germany during the first half of 2005. As to the first nine months of 2006 figures, there had only been exported a value of 1.271.000 US dollars handmade carpet. During the same period handmade carpet export to Australia had increased by 223%. Being the two other countries which had also recorded increase in handmade carpet export, while Belgium performed an increase of 16%, Greece had an increase ratio of 8,6%. Excluding these 3 countries, Turkish handmade carpet export to the EU (15) countries had decreased by various ratios. Examining the machine made carpet export figures, there had been downturns realized in Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and Portugal. On the other hand, Turkey’s machine made carpet export to Greece, Holland, England and Ireland had increased by considerable ratios. In brief, Turkish machine made carpet export to EU (15) countries had increased by 14,6%.

Turkish Carpet Export To The New EU Member Countries

Having been performed handmade carpet export value of 877.000 US dollars to Czech Republic between January-September 2005, during the same period of 2006 export value of only 98.000 US dollars has been performed. Because of this tendency, Turkey’s handmade carpet export to the new EU member countries is seen to be decreased by 72%. Among the countries in this group the highest machine made carpet export had been performed to Poland. Machine made carpet export to this country has continued its increase. During the first nine months of this year, by a 52% increase in Turkish carpet export figure, Poland has reached 17.088.000 US dollars. Holding a considerable share of the total Turkish machine made carpet export, machine made carpet and total export increase ratios of this country are also seen high.

Turkish Carpet Export To Other OECD Countries

Turkey’s handmade carpet export to the other OECD countries having high national income per capita such as; Switzerland, Japan and the U.S.A. had increased by 24,7% while the same increase had been achieved in machine made carpet export by 13,1%. This country group has been holding the highest share of the total Turkish handmade carpet export. In terms of handmade carpet export; Japan, Switzerland, Canada and the U.S.A. have been the striking countries. Holding a significiant position in Turkey’s handmade carpet export, 50% more export activity has been performed to the U.S.A. during the first nine months of this year compared to the same period of last year. With this high increase ratio, share of the U.S.A. has reached up to 20% in Turkey’s total handmade carpet export. In other words, one out of five exported carpets are taken by the U.S.A. Considerable downturn has drawn attention in export figures of Switzerland during this period. While a value of 1.813.000 US dollars handmade carpet had been exported to this country during the January-September 2005 period, this figure remained at an export value of 511.000 US. dollars during the same period of 2006. While handmade carpet export to Canada has decreased, an increase in Turkish handmade carpet export to Norway and New Zealand has been realized. While Saudi Arabia had been the leading country in Turkey’s machine made carpet export as to 2005, the U.S.A. had followed her secondly. Machine made carpet export to the U.S.A. had increased by 7,6% and reached an export value of 37.068.000 US dollars during the first nine months of 2006. Machine made carpet export of Turkey to Canada had decreased in 2005 compared to 2004. This downturn tendency has continued during the first three months of 2006. However, evaluating the figures of the first nine months of 2006, a ratio of 17,5% increase in machine made carpet export has been realized.

Turkish Carpet Export To Other European Countries

While Turkey’s machine made carpet export to the countries seen in the table had increased by 13,2%, handmade carpet export figures had also increased by 22,8%. Turkey’s handmade carpet export to these countries hadn’t been so high. On the other hand, machine made carpet export performed to Romania stood out. Last year, a value of 28.562.000 US dollars machine made carpet export had been performed to Romania. During the first nine months of this year, Turkey has performed an export value of 22.717.000 US dollars machine made carpet to this country. Being another country in this group, Turkey’s carpet export to Bulgaria has also increased both in handmade and machine made carpets.

Turkish Carpet Export To Other Asian Countries

Among the countries in this group, Turkish carpet export to Taiwan and Hong Kong had decreased. On the other hand, Turkey’s export to other countries in this group had increased with considerable ratios. There had been performed significant amounts of carpet export to Malaysia, Pakistan and China.

Turkish Carpet Export To African Countries

Turkey’s carpet export had increased by 82% to the African countries which held small share in total carpet export. Generally all the carpets exported to these countries had been machine made. Turkish carpet export to Algeria had decreased in 2005, compared to 2004. This downturn tendency has continued during the first nine months of 2006. There have also been recorded considerable increases in machine made carpet export to Morocco, Libia,Tunusia and Egypt.

10 Leading Countries In Machine Made Carpet Export During January-September 2006 Period

70,8% of Turkey’s total machine made carpet export has been performed to the 10 countries as to the export figures of January-September 2006 period. Total share of the 10 leading countries has been increased. Considering the end of last year, Poland had been the 10th country on the list. In case of continuing her rapid growth, Poland could be among the 5 leading countries by the end of 2006. Among these 10 countries, Turkey’s machine made carpet export to Ukraine has decreased. On the other hand, versatile increases have been recorded in the figures of the remaining 9 countries.

 

10 Leading Countries In Handmade Carpet Export During January-September 2006 Period

10 countries hold a 39,8% part of the total Turkish handmade carpet export. While holding a share of 13,1% during the first nine months of last year, in the same period of 2006 export share of the U.S.A. has increased up to 20,6%. Other countries on the list standing out can be listed as; Austria, Iraq and Russian Federation.
