Export figures of Turkish carpet sector
“Ever since 2002 the export figures of Turkish carpet sector have been improving enormously and by the first half of 2007 the figures have reached 412 million U.S dollars value. The export growth of Turkish carpets are due to the enlargement of the global carpet markets, ascending supply capacity of Turkish carpet sector as well as the restructuring and improvement movements of the neighbouring countries. ”
According to the statistics by Istanbul Textile and Confection Exporters Association (ITKIB), a strong export growth has been achieved by Turkish carpet manufacturers in 2007. In addition to Europe, the export sales to the U.S market yielded a significant increase during the first three-quarters of 2007. Export figures point at 683 million dollars of export sales which shows 33% increase compared to the same period last year.

In January-September 2007 period, general Turkish exports has been subject to 23.5% increase which proves that sales volume of Turkish carpets has recorded a higher rate increase. The statistics show that the export value of machine made carpets has reached 585 million US dollars whereas the demand for hand made carpets in overseas markets recorded a value of 97 million US dollars.
In 2006 Turkish carpet sector was quite attractive for the international customers. Export figures clearly prove the demand: a 11.2% increase in total sales and the sector continued its upward trend again in 2007. During January-September period of 2007, the export sales increased by 33%. Today carpet sector has a 0.9% export share in the total export activities of Turkey.
EU countries secure the top position in Turkish carpet exports
ITKIB stated that 22.4% of the total carpet exports has been achieved in European countries. Compared to the previous year, export sales to EU were increased by 35.1%. New members of the union also showed a great interest in Turkish carpets and there has been a 47.1% increase in the rate of export sales to these countries. Middle East countries have an important part in Turkish carpet exports. Today the share of the Middle East countries in Turkish carpet exports is around 20.5% and the growth rate is almost 29.9%.
Africa and other European countries have a rather small share however we should highlight the increase rate of the export sales to these regions. For the last nine months, the exports to Africa increased by 81.5% and 33.2% to other European countries.
More sales to USA
Having a significant share in Turkish carpet exports, the US market maintains the upward trend started in 2005. During the first nine months of 2007, export sales to the U.S market showed an impressive growth of 27.2%. The export increase recorded in the U.S market which is among the largest carpet importers of the world, is absolutely noteworthy.
Overall, the results of Turkish carpet manufacturers in 2007 are very positive. Sales increases and enlarged market shares are achieved.
